As of late 2024–2025, there are estimated to be around 7,500 wild elephants in Sri Lanka. This number reflects an increase from the 5,879 individuals recorded in the 2011 census. They are primarily found in the dry zone's national parks, such as Udawalawe, with a small number of captive elephants also present.
